Personality:

Determined. As a child, Kurapika had a dream of departing the secluded Kurta clan to seek for a doctor to treat his best friend, who became blind after an accident that Kurapika blames himself for. This generated numerous arguments with the elders of the clan, but ultimately, there was no stopping Kurapika from taking the test to leave once he learned about Hunters, who are people who dedicate themselves to protecting knowledge, people, and nature. After much arguing, Kurapika passed the exam and started his quest to find a cure for Pairo’s blindness - only to find himself with no home to return to, as the Kurta clan was massacred for their scarlet eyes by the Phantom Troupe (also known as The Spider) while Kurapika was absent. His resolve then shifts towards a much darker road; his ultimate goal in life now is avenging his fallen brethren by capturing the Spider and collecting the eyes to return them home.

In order to do this, he notably created a series of powers that become much more potent under certain conditions, such as Emperor Time, which takes one hour of his lifespan for each minute he spends using it, a display of his drive in exchange for power. Nothing stops Kurapika, not even his morals, as he has not only joined the mafia in order to achieve his goals, but he also sailed to the unknown Dark Continent and became a Zodiac, one of the leaders of the Hunters, all so that he could effectively carry out his purpose in life.


Loving. Although Kurapika may appear cold and distant at first glance, he is nothing but kind and caring. He stands up for his friends when they're in trouble, even sometimes jumping to violence to defend those he considers to need his help - such as brawling with three adult men when he was a child to defend Pairo, who had been made fun of due to his blindness. He also put his vengeance on hold in order to rescue Killua from his terrible home after the events of the Hunter Exam, and later on, he did the same in order to ensure the safety of Killua and Gon who had been in the hands of the Phantom Troupe. Kurapika cares deeply about those who manage to come near him, as he cannot afford to lose anyone else. He grows attached fairly quickly, and it's something Kurapika finds that he cannot afford - the happier he is, the less rage there is within him, so he ghosts, doesn't pick up calls, doesn't come close to those he loves as to protect himself against happiness.

Easily-Aggravated. Kurapika has a short fuse. It's rather easy to rattle him, but especially so in the face of senseless violence, unkindness, selfishness, and injustice. He is quick to stand up against those things, not at all worried at the time about what may come out of it. The biggest triggers for him are: anything related to the scarlet eyes, as well as the Phantom Troupe, or bad-mouthing his clan. It makes Kurapika go absolutely feral and it turns him into a reckless, uncontrollable mess of a man as he leaves all logic and reason aside. Even the sight of a real spider triggers him. An example of how easy it is to enrage Kurapika was when a mafia man was shit-talking him and his employers, which resulted in Kurapika completely losing sight that it could be perhaps best for everyone that he doesn't punch a mafia member in the face. Which he did. No regrets.

Collected. When he's got a clear mind, Kurapika is calm, cool, collected, straightforward, and nothing less than capable of finding the best solution with a calm demeanor, unless triggered. He's very polite in tone, and he's able to perform calmly in extreme situations, such as combat and when devising plans through the Hunter's Exam in order to ensure his passing mark and to complete every challenge. He's a bookworm, thus all the knowledge he has accumulated over the years makes him confident in his capabilities and so, he's able to maintain his calm even at the direst of times.

Blunt. Kurapika, albeit polite, has no filter. He thinks it, he says it, no other pondering in his mind. Unfortunately, due to his incredible intelligence and knowledge of the world, he comes off as condescending and arrogant on occasion... Which sometimes, he absolutely is. Oops. From the list of burns, a notable example is this conversation with Leorio:

"Kurapika, I feel like you've changed. Like you're more intense and intimidating now."
"... I wish I could say the same about you?"

Suitability: Kurapika is an incredibly resolute individual. In order to achieve his goals, he's joined the mafia as well as the group that oversees the Hunter's Association - not because he agrees with them, or anything like it. It's merely because it brought him closer to recovering the scarlet eyes of his fallen clan. ADI is the only association that seems to know what's going on, so Kurapika would engage with ADI for survival and so that he can research a way to return home.



Powers/Abilities:

NON-NEN ABILITIES

Scarlet Eyes — Those of the Kurta Clan have a physiological anomaly that causes their eyes to become scarlet and bright when they're dealing with extreme emotions, although Kurapika can turn his eyes scarlet at will through rigorous training. Once activated, the Kurta receive a surge in both strength and speed. For Kurapika specifically, once his eyes turn red, he loses all restraints and plunges into a much more primal state of being, where reason and rationality are discarded when triggered. Unfortunately, the usage of the scarlet eyes can have severe health consequences — such as incapacitating him with fever and bouts of unconsciousness for extended limits of time. The time limit is about three hours, and then fatigue and pain cause him to pass out and remain so threefold. Kurapika speculates that repeated long uses or ones induced by stealing particularly powerful abilities may cause him to reach the limit earlier than three hours. I'd think that in order to receive the benefits of activating the Scarlet Eyes, Kurapika would need to feed his Patron, while the eye-color change and fatigue that comes from it remains a biological reaction?

Instinct&Hearing — Kurapika has a keener sense of hearing than your average person, which can serve him greatly to overhear conversations, as well as a great sense of intuition. These are enough for him to sense something he's being followed or react to being attacked quickly, even prior to learning Nen.

Enhanced Strength — Kurapika is canonically able to open a 4-ton door. His strength increases with Scarlet Eyes usage. While this was achieved by shonen anime training, I would like his strength to be fuelled by his Patron!

Enhanced Speed, Reflexes, and Agility — Kurapika can strike several times before his opponent can react and even disappear out of sight in a clear space with a leap. He's able to jump several meters in the air and hit his opponents from various angles with acrobatic moves.

High Intellect & Master Strategist — Kurapika is one of the most brilliant characters in the series, and due to his outstanding intelligence, he was appointed leader of the Mafia's bodyguards. A bookworm, Kurapika holds knowledge about many topics, ranging from psychology to other cultures, from history to forensic. Due to his longing for new ideas, he is a fast learner with an impressive memory. Due to his analytic skills, there's a rumor that he is able to read minds. Absolutely cannot, though! He's also exceptional at non-verbal communication, being able to identify moles and react to being told half-truths by their eyes and body language.

Fighting — Not only is he highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, being able to fight Uvogin, whose primary weapon is his incredible physical strength used in unarmed combat, Kurapika also masters a few weapons. At the beginning of the series, prior to learning Nen, he wielded a pair of bokken swords linked by a thread that could be used also as a nunchaku. Kurapika has been seen with knives, guns, shurikens, and others, albeit most of them used for the sole purpose of intimidation. Lately, he uses his chains in combat almost like they're an extension of him. He's able to entangle targets at a distance of almost 30 meters in less than a second.

NEN ABILITIES

Nen is the manipulation of one's lifeforce, or aura. It has several applications, and Kurapika is not only rather versed in the capabilities and theory of Nen but is a skilled user. These are powers, so in order to have access to any of the below, Kurapika will have to feed his patron! For the sake of length, here are the Four Major Principles & Advanced Techniques that Kurapika can use.

Conjurer — Kurapika is naturally a Conjurer, being able to summon a specific object at will. In his case, it's a set of chains, in which each finger has a different application and power that Kurapika can use in several different instances, including combat. Since the chains are materialized, their size and length can be controlled to a certain degree - I'd say 35 meters would be the most. He is able to conceal his chain in order to bind his opponent without their knowledge until it is too late.

Emperor Time/Specialist — When Kurapika activates Scarlet Eyes, his aura type changes and he is able to yield powers from other types of aura at the cost of one hour of his life for every second spent with Emperor Time activated, because he is a revengeful special snowflake. It increases his capacities to great degrees, though, as will be explained below.

Dowsing Chain — A ball and chain on his ring finger ring. Kurapika uses this frequently under normal situations, for defensive and offensive purposes when engaged in combat. It has a small ball-like weight at the end which moves in the direction of whatever he is dowsing for. It can be used for locating individuals and identifying if someone is lying. Without Emperor Time, Kurapika needs to be directly in front of the target for such lie detection to be effective. Whilst Emperor Time is active, it's possible for him to use that ability also through video recordings if he has met the subject before.

Chain Jail — A hook on his middle finger ring (lmao). Chain Jail is one of his most OP skills, allowing him to imprison a member of the Phantom Troupe in a tight hold and forcing them into a state that shuts off their aura and prevents the use of Nen abilities. Should Kurapika attempt to use this skill on anyone that isn't a Phantom Troupe member, he will die as per the conditions created to make this power possible.

Holy Chain — A cross on his thumb ring. It cures wounds. When Kurapika is in his Specialist state, it can heal serious injuries, such as a fractured arm, within seconds.

Judgment Chain — A blade on his pinky ring. This lovely little blade, known as the Stake of Retribution, enters the victim's body and wraps around their heart, which then Kurapika gives the victim an order, which, if violated, results in the Stake of Retribution piercing the victim's heart, killing them. He is capable of issuing a minimum of two commands per Stake of Retribution, and he can dismiss it at will. Judgment Chain can only be used when Kurapika activates Emperor Time.

Steal Chain — A syringe on his index finger. As it pierces the body of the target, it drains their aura and steals one of their Nen abilities. It fucking hurts. The target is unable to use the stolen ability until it is returned to them. The death of the original owner does not result in Kurapika losing possession of a stolen ability. I'm not sure if this ability can be used to steal people's powers that are not Nen-related, though!

Stealth Dolphin — Through Emperor Time, Kurapika can summon an adorable dolphin-like construct that bears a syringe on each pectoral fin, only visible and audible to Kurapika himself. The dolphin can "equip" and analyze the stolen ability, informing Kurapika of its name, functions, and basic conditions. Kurapika can then use the stolen ability for himself or loan it to another person, including non-users, by stabbing them with Steal Chain. If the ability goes to someone else, a listening device is conjured in that person's ear that enables them to see the dolphin and communicate with it through telepathy. The dolphin can help the new recipient to use the ability and will utilize it itself if the recipient of the loaned ability asks it to.

A side-effect of Stealth Dolphin is that when it is used on a non-Nen user, it will allow them to see aura and, after the loaned ability is activated, semi-force their biology to open up to Nen, essentially making them Nen users. Training is still necessary to control one's own aura flow and prevent its leakage. Again, unsure how this would apply! Probably this part can be erased altogether if you'd prefer!

If Kurapika equips the dolphin with a stolen ability he can use Steal Chain again, but transferring it does not allow him to exit Emperor Time until the ability is used. Regardless of who controls it, a stolen ability can be used only once, after which it is returned to the original user. As a downside, as long as all stolen abilities are not returned, Emperor Time will remain active. The dolphin will regularly notify Kurapika of how long Emperor Time has been active unless it is put on standby, in which case it can be made to disappear. Should Kurapika faint while someone else is using an ability loaned to them by him, that person will pass out as well.

Entity Affinity: The Hunt. Everything in Kurapika's life has been about pursuing a goal - from the dream of becoming a Hunter and leaving his small village and having adventures with his best friend, to the self-destructive quest he found himself in order to annihilate the Spider and retrieve the scarlet eyes.
